Unhappy Oil pressure

So yesterday My engine started shaking everytime I pressed on the gas, and I noticed that my oil pressure guage was lower than usual. I pulled over to check, no leaks and no freaking oil in the engine either!!! I put on a new filter and mobil1 oil. But every time I slow down the oil pressure guage slowly drops to 0%. When I speed up it goes back up.

Re: Oil pressure

Sounds like your oil pump could be going bad... Where did all the oil go the first time? Did it just burn it all out and you hadn't checked it for a while?... Also, does it loose pressure when you start it and let it idle? If so, let it idle and pop your hood and take the oil fill cap off and see if your motor is slinging oil around in the head. If so your sending unit on the bottom of the oil filter housing is bad. But if its not slinging any oil around then shut it off immediately and don't drive it until you get it fixed... I would say make sure its not the sending unit gone bad, then I would check the oil pump. But it sounds like its not getting any oil at all and is indeed the oil pump.

Re: Oil pressure

Fing thing. Well I'll do it tommorrow. But any ideas on the cost of a new oil pump? Or how hard that is to R/R?

Re: Oil pressure

year/ engine size/ 2WD or 4WD? automatic? stick?

um, there's a free chilton/haynes type manual online on www.autozone.com repair info section... just enter the vehicle 1st, then goto that link to see what it entails, since I dunno your car & your past mechanical abilities...

Ok lets get something straight here. Its not gonna matter if its 2wd, 4wd, auto, or stick because we aren't talking about the drivetrain here. We are talking about his motor not having oil pressure...

The cost of a new oil pump is gonna vary to wherever you decide to get it from. Personally though, I wouldn't go and get some cheap off brand oil pump considering the importance of oil to the motor.

Re: Oil pressure

Type of vehicle and engine make all the differance in the world if you have to remove the oil pan. 2wd-4wd can make a differance in some cases. Cooler lines from an auto trans might cause an insignificant annoyance. Is your oil pump on the bottom of your engine inside the oil pan or on the front of the crankshaft? In either case oil pumps don't wear out. You may have a broken pressure relief valve spring that regulates oil pressure. The relief valve is often part of the oil pump. Replace the spring with a new one. Or buy a new pump that has a new spring.

Re: Oil pressure

Our pumps are in the oil filter housings... And I didn't say anything about engine size not mattering. Just drivetrain things don't matter on our cars in this subject matter.

You need to fill it up with oil and put a manual test oil pressure gauge on it.
No oil and low oil pressure could be a bad leaking oil sending unit.
As said look for oil leaks and if the engine has no or low pressure with a manual test gauge the look at oil pump.

Re: Oil pressure

He hasn't confirmed yet if it has a leak or if he just let the motor burn out all his oil... It doesn't take long with these cars if its getting up there in mileage and you give it about 2 weeks without checking it...

Re: Oil pressure

Well I checked it today. Oil is squirting around. So my car is making a last ditch effort for me not to kill it. I'm gonna go buy the sensor to see if that fixes it. Thanks for your guys help.

Re: Oil pressure

So it sounds like you do have oil pressure, the gauge just isn't reading it. Like I suggested before the sending unit is just bad then... Keep an eye on the oil though. I am still curious as to where it all went before when you had none in it... Do you check your oil on a regular basis then or not?

Re: Oil pressure

I checked it every week or 2. I found theres a difference between a oil pressure guage and oil pressure switch. Their both on the oil pump housing. It was the oil guage unit.
