Mounts?

Okay, so my new exhaust supports keep breaking off, and I have to keep driving 45 miles away in Los Angeles traffic to get them rewelded. I keep asking this guy if the exhaust is supposed to be shaking this much, to which he replies, "iSi!". Anyhow, my car does vibrate quite a bit, so that my steering wheel actually starts bouncing around somewhat violently at startup. When I powerbrake moderately it with the hood up, I can see the left (driver's side) lifting up about an inch, but the right side stays still. Does this tell us anything - as far as the engine mounts go? I really need to figure out what is causing this vibrating - I can't keep going back to that place to get this exhaust fixed. He's put like 6 different supports on this system, and I know he's getting tired of seeing me, so I know that he's doing a decent welding job.

You probably do need mounts. The mounts have a safety ring to prevent the engine from going to far.
Torque only goes one way so only one side will lift on excelleration. The other side will only lift on decel when you use engine braking.

Thanks! So are you saying that this motion is normal, or not?

A small amount of motion is normal, as the mounts are rubber. But an inch or more is not normal.

Alright...thanks again. I figured that a small amount of motion would be normal, but not too much. I'm getting my oil changed tomorrow, I'll see if they can check it while they're under there.

I've finally conceded that it's more practical to get my oil changed then to do it myself...

If you still have the original motor mounts, then I guarantee you they need to be replaced. The stock mounts are fluid filled and are prone to going bad. Get new solid rubber ones from Super Coupe Performance.
