22re engine rebuild or new
Hey, I have a 22re engine with 217,000 miles on it and I don't know what would be best to do. Should I have it rebuilt or should I just swap a new engine in it? The cylinder walls are real show signs of wear.
Can I just put new rings in , and hope for the best? Any help is needed! thanks.

Re: 22re engine rebuild or new
Look for an engine importer and see if you can get a used one from Japan. Most of the motors have between thirty and forty thousand miles and are warrantied for twelve months or twelve thousand miles. The motors usually cost about five to six hundred dollars, but you may even find one for less. To find one, look in classified ads available at auto parts stores.
To rebuild your motor, you are going to need pistons, bearings, seals, machine shop services, etc. |

Re: 22re engine rebuild or new
Don't even think about a partial rebuild. Have a machine shop bore it and press on new pistons on the connecting rods. Have the crankshaft polished or turned. Have a valve job done also. The machine shop will give you a price for parts and labor. I think the previous post is the way to go. I have used them with no problem.

Re: 22re engine rebuild or new
I just rebuilt my 22 RE that had 247,000 miles on it and it runs great. I have no regret on rebuilding it. It was a fun project and not too expensive either.

Re: 22re engine rebuild or new
If the cylinder bore is worn, new rings aren't going to be able to seal. If you are going to rebuild the motor, do it right and the motor will last another 200+ thousand miles, take shortcuts and the motor might not last a week. If you are trying to save money, look for a good used motor.
