Front Strut Cartridge Replacement
97 Lumina 3.1L
I got the special tool from AutoZone. The 24mm socket fits the stem nut. Next step is what I am trying to figure out. Is it just jamming a Torx50 bit between the 24mm socket wall and the stem? Thanks. |

Re: Front Strut Cartridge Replacement
The torx fits into the top of the strut stud to hold it from turning as the socket or box wrench turns the 15/16 nut.

Re: Front Strut Cartridge Replacement
I still fail to see how the torx bit holds the stem from spinning. The stem top does not have recess that matches the torx bit. The stem top is just flat.
I gave up and used an air impact wrench. It worked well. Thanks. |

Re: Front Strut Cartridge Replacement
For what it is worth the oe cartridges on my 97 Lum. had the torx socket on the end, many aftermarket do not. Good they were'nt rusted together.

Re: Front Strut Cartridge Replacement
Thank you for solving the mystery of the torx bit for me. Yes, OEM cartridge was replaced at 60K miles. Now it has 130K miles. I hope this will last through the remaining life of the vehicle. Just in case, I will put a drop of oil on the stem thread. Thanks.
