Drum Brake Emergency Cable Removal

I have a '92 4 cyl. convertible. I did the front disc with new equipment throughout including better quality premiunm perforated discs. However I still have to get those stamped washers which serve as nuts to hold the disc in place as otherwise it will fall loose in the brake pads if the wheel is pulled. No one in the parts business seems to have them but maybe they don't know what tpo look for. No problem.

The real problem is the rear drum brakes. I can't disconnect or reconnect the end ferrule. I gopt one out buty don't want to renew the battle on the other side. There is supposed to be an adjuster according to several manuals but nothing moves except a cupcake-like deep ferrule with fingers. And that is about 15 degrees rotation. I will look further in the manuals but hope I don't have to disconnect something further up the underside of the car. No room for that as is jacked up at rear in yard. This is keeping me from finishing the rear end.

Incidentally I need a top and shopped for a few. One of my books has the installation process but descriptions don't make it as I don't exactly know what they're talking about. But in a garage or shed I can afford to experiment. Otherwise a new top is around $1000 installed at one place in chicago.

I have three LeBarons and will keep the four for cheap travel, redo my 6 which apparently has a cooked and blown head gasket, and likely chop the other 6 for parts.

Re: Drum Brake Emergency Cable Removal

The adjuster they refer to is the adjustment for the emergency brake. There's a 50/50 chance that the cable runs completely above the underbody and you won't be able to reach it, but the adjuster should be there somewhere in reach. I haven't personally looked for mine yet, but I will have to as I will be replacing my drums very soon. What you should be looking for is a nut or bolt along the brake's tension line. Unfortunately since these are very rarely used you may have to break a rust seal....or in the case of my last car, literally break the entire adjuster and have to put a new one in.
