Disk brake rotor and pad upgrade
I have 2001 Silverado short bed step side 4wd. The stopping power of this truck was crappy from new. I am wondering if anybody used the Stainless steel brake upgrade. Slotted rotors and high performance pads. Did anyone have any luck with other brand upgrades?
Any infor will be appreciated. Thanks Steve |

i like the carbon metalic pads,hotter they get the better they grab. have not tried ceramic yet. you might try some pads before you buck up for those rotors they sound pricey. i do know that some half ass glazed over pads can get you hurt.

The standard pads on these trucks are already Ceramic.. believe it or not, this pads are rated pretty high.. I believe it is the braking system on this trucks that are poor not the pads themselves.

Does the truck have the 12" rear rotors? Two-piston calipers? Those are generally more than adequate, but the brake bias as set by the proportioning valve is usually terrible. I have the same rear rotors on a passenger car, and have adjusted brake bias for a true 50-50, and allow the swept area and rotor sizes to bias the brakes, and they do VERY well (even with the ABS). I'm NOT advocating you do this on your truck, since the rears would tend to lock early when the truck is empty, but adjusting the bias may be at least worth studying.
Carbon/metallic pads do seem to stop faster, but cut up the rotors faster as well. |

Thanks for the input guys. I have 40,000 miles on this truck and asume that the pads are ceramic. Are those the pads that glaze? If the carbon metalic pads grab better but wear the rotors faster,that still sounds better then plowing into the back of another car.

I was doing 60mph when some jacka** decided to lock up the brakes in front of me so he could make his turn....anyway i stopped that truck and trailer faster than i thought possible....thank god i just put the new SSBC's on the week before..... Anyway enough blah ....i love them, i paid like $380 from jegs....

The only problems I've noticed with carbo-mets is dusting. That's more of a nuisance than a problem, but they'll dust faster than anything else I've used. They also tends to generate a little high-pitched whine at low speed with the brakes not applied - A little like aircraft brakes.

I have been considering putting the slotted rotros on my truck, but am waiting until I wear the original set of pads and rotors out. I have 76,xxx miles on now with plenty of pad left.
Anyway, I had the carbon metalic pads on my wifes car and after 1.5 weeks, the started sqeeking something horendous everytime you got below 30 mph. So I put the ceramic pad on them, and not only get less brake dust, but have been very pleased with them. Also with the ceramic pads, she has not been able to worp the rotors yet. I would like to see what the ceramic pad would do with a cross drilled/slotted rotor. Just my worth.

I have noticed the extra noise as well (see previous post) but the stopping power is second to none.
