I'm thinking of buying a 1990 Eclipse as my first car, and was wondering what engines would bolt in besides the stock 1.8L EFI (it runs, but is on it's way out). My dad says that this is the only engine that will bolt up to the tranny (besides the dual overhead cam) without swapping the transmission, ECM, wiring harness from a donor car. He also said the carriage would have to be fabricated to accept any other motor. I've heard that an Eagle Talon is practically the same car, but has anyone swapped in a bigger engine without changing a lot of stuff?

Re: Engine Swap - 1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse
Yes people have done it before. Check out the faqs or search. On a 90 I suggest you just wait around for a better one to turn up. It's probably not worth it to swap it.

A swap on that POS is wayyy more than its worth. If anything, I would say either run it until it blows up and junk it or find another 1.8 to go in.
