2004 SS or 2006 SS

I have found 2 Monte Carlo SS models for sale.

-2004 SS supercharged Dale Jr. Edition 9k miles
-2006 SS V8 6k miles

Both are listed for close to the same price. The '06 would be a better deal. Do either of these models have any known problems? I'm trying to get out of a POS SVT Focus. How reliable are these cars. Had a Chevy before and liked it a lot. Any advise would be helpful.

Re: 2004 SS or 2006 SS

Well I have a 04 Intimidator SS and I LOVE it. The gas mileage is good too and you really feel it kick when you hit the gas. I am not sure how the mileage is on the v8 or how it feels driving. I just know I like my 04.

Re: 2004 SS or 2006 SS

Id take that 06 because of the 50 HP increase over the 04, gas mileage aint too bad only about 2-4 mpg less than the v6.

I'd take the 04 because I don't care for the look of the 06's.

Re: 2004 SS or 2006 SS

If you really want an 04, do not get a special edition (earnhardt or stewart or any other ones) - they get jacked up in price and have no greater performance over any other ss's. The 3800 Series II S/C is a great motor, powerful, wonderfully reliable and pretty good on gas.

06 SS's are absolutely gorgeous. The 5.3L engine is much smoother than the 3.8 (which is pretty smooth to begin with) and the power will be very evident everywhere (nearly 1 sec faster to 60 than the 04). It has "dod" to help save gas, but there's no way you'd get as good of mileage with this as you would w/an 04. Reliability is another issue, as this is a 1st yr updated car - looking back throughout gm's recent history, it's usually better to wait a few models years to get kinks straightened out. However, the 5.3 has been used for a year already in the Pontiac Grand Prix and a very similar form of it has been used in the Trailblazer. I dunno how reliable the DOD thing is - in my trailblazer the engine clicks and clanks away when not using all 8 cylinders.

The 06 also has a much nicer interior and seats (though no more tan interiors). I would probably get the 06, if just for the newer car feel and v8.

Re: 2004 SS or 2006 SS

Im not much into the looks of the 06s and all, but it has started to grow a bit on me although the 00-05 still looks better the 06 ones look way tougher.
