Re: 78 Ford t-brid

The sugar in the tank is myth, but like anything, foreign objects are not good. The intake and filter sock for the fuel line is on the top of the tank so it won't do anything, besides, most tanks that old have sludge in the bottom anyway, just don't run it dry and it should be fine. I won't hurt anything. But if you want just drop the tank and drain it, have it flushed out and remount it. Not very $$. Anything that may have got into the fuel system should run itself out after driving for a while.

BTW, this was on an episode of "Mythbusters" on Discovery a few months ago, they busted it too.

As far as the engine, it depends if you want to keep it original. If it doesn't matter you can pick up a remanufactured engine for around $2,000-$3,500 or get one from a junkyard for around $500 or so. If yours has the OEM 460 they made those up into the 1980's so finding one should be easy. You can probably have a good shop rebuild the one it has now for about $3,000 but if the block is bad then you will want to get a good one.

I had the 460 in my 72 rebuild, engine compartment cleaned and repainted and everything painted to OEM stats for $3,500. This was from a high end restoration shop you should be able to get it cheaper than that.

Hope this helps,
Mark
