Driveshaft removal (sorry for the silly question)

Mine is a two-piece drive shaft. When I was trying to remove it, I took off the 4 nuts and two clamps from the rear U-joint, I took off the two nuts for the center bearing, however, the driveshaft still refused to get off from the rear end. Maybe it's because of rust, I tried to hammer it, but it is still there. Anyone who did this before?

Yeah I swapped out my old 2 piece one for the standard aluminum one. Wasn't that hard really. Sounds like you've already got all the bolts out, I couldnt imagine why it would still be hanging in there. Start beating the crap out of it. Rust could be the problem, especially if the cars been up north most of its life.

Bigger hammer

Nah, I'm with you on the theory that it's probably just rust. Make sure you mark the shaft position with the receiving end on the yoke and trans!

Re: Driveshaft removal (sorry for the silly question)

Hey guys,

Appreciate the advice. I will try them this evening and let you guys know whether they works.

BTW, for the mark of the position, all the manual requires that, does that mean the balance of the shaft can only be done after the driveshaft is installed. I'm thinking to buy an aluminum one. They claimed the new shaft is well balanced. I'm confused.

Re: Driveshaft removal (sorry for the silly question)

when i helped my friend get the shaft off his 200sx it wouldn't budge with all the bolts out. we just sprayed lots of WD40, got it turning at a few rpm (it was on a lift) then got a wrench, clamped it an levered it about with the rare brakes on. took a little while but it came off quite easily after that.

Re: Driveshaft removal (sorry for the silly question)

I used WD40, prybar, it still refuse to get off. It seems I will have to try what Straight Six suggested. You mean start the engine, get to "D" left foot on brake, right foot on gas, right?

Hope I won't damage the car.

Thanks a lot.

Re: Driveshaft removal (sorry for the silly question)

That's weird that it wont budge at all. When I removed the center supports off mine (where the velocity joint is) the middle sagged down and all I had to do was move that section up and down and it just dropped right out. Are you sure you have all the screws out that hold up the center section? It really shouldnt be that hard, especially with a 2 piece shaft.

make sure the driven wheels are off the ground. what we did was put the accelerator in really gently, so the wheels are turning really slowly, the rolling resistance in the hubs and diff may just be enough to loosen it. we never had the shaft moving at more than a few rpm because we didn't want the u-joints to suddenly disengage and have the driveshaft suddenly drop and hit something.

if it still wont budge you could try putting the handbrake on (as little as possible, don't make it so the wheels are 100% locked solid) and giving it some gas (again, only a few rpm) that may work, but don't hold me responsibe if something goes wrong.

Sometimes the joint caps stick in the yoke. Like almost the point to being pressed in. You don't want to be hammer in there though. I am sure your pinion bearings don't care for the jarring. You want to apply continuous solid pressure. Take a pry bar preferable and just keep apply more and more pressure. As long as all the bolts are out, it will pop off. Good luck

Edit- Also the penetrating oil/wd40 will help loosen it up as well. Try adding a little of that as well.
