My 3000GT Story
As some of you might remember, I purchased a 1992 3000GT SL a few months back that had a few problems (low compression in cylinder 3, TCU went out, shift lock broken, ECS went out). I tried to get rid of the car legally, but as many of you guessed that didn't work out. So now I am stuck with this car, not to say that that is all that bad. But I have an uphill struggle to go through. Not to mention all the cosmetics wrong with the car.
I know there are a few things I could do to check what is really wrong with the compression, I have a few auto buddies whom are willing to help me. One mentioned doing a wet test, pouring oil into the spark plug leading to the bad cylinder? Something like that, and he could possibly tell me whether it was bad rings or a bad valve. Im not too car savvy yet so excuse my ignorance. Anyway, Ill be sure to post some pictures, its really not too bad I suppose, only a 103,000 miles and some of the paint is pretty good, I guess this what 3400 dollars gets you. |

Re: My 3000GT Story
i remember you posting about the TCU/ATX problems.
sounds like the advice of your car buddies is very good. low compression could be caused by a leak in the head (bad/bent valve), or a leak in the cylinder wall (around outside of piston). the best way to learn about cars is to work on them with people who know what they're doing, so they can explain things. secondly, reading is also very helpful, but its best to put the theory to practice. so with that manual on cd i sent you, start looking through that regarding the problems you are having. also, searching this forum and asking questions is very helpful, and the right approach. we're here to give you any and all help that you need.

Re: My 3000GT Story
Yeah thanks, the first thing I am going to try to fix is definetl the compression and transmission, I actually have a friend who wants it and I might let it go for 2000 (a loss of 1400...) and just save up a lot more and either buy a twin turbo, or another N/A. My other resort is to get a Honde Prelude or something, just for commuting purposes. But I will definetly be asking questions if I come into any bumbs. thanks.

Re: My 3000GT Story
Just another question, when the local chop checked out my car, they never recieved any readouts from the TCU, and they suspected that the TCU actually was working yet was telling me that the tranny was bad, which is why it is in failsafe mode. I find this hard to believe because of my prior knowledge of this type of problem, stuck in 3rd and so on. My question is, does anyone know that when a TCU does go out, does it still give out computer readings or is IT the real problem? If so, then I will be buying one shortly...
