3.42's or 3.73's?

I have 2.73's on my auto right now... which means i have a series 2 carrier...

A. what gear would you recommend for a noticable power increase and still retain gas mileage that will work with the series 2?
B. will it affect the top speed?
C. will it throw off my speedometer?
D. how much for an install?
E. do you need a tune after install?

Thanks alot!!

A 3.08
B. Yes, top speed (theoretical) will be lower.
C. Yes, you will need to recalibrate your speedometer. You can use the speedo gear calc at 700r4.com.
D. Depends on if you're attempting this yourself, swap total rear end or just gears.
E. Well, the whole thing works better when every individual thing works well. If you haven't tuned it up in a while, now would be a good thing, but it isn't absolutely necessary.

In all seriousness....I would get a torque converter. If you have an LS1...get a TC with a stall speed of 2800-3600 with the lockup option. I wouldn't get gears if you need to retain gas mileage and with a TC, you're looking ato close to a .5 second reduction in times. Install times...I have no idea. If I don't do it on my own, its done by friends.

If you are still stuck on gears, I would go with 3.42s. There isn't that much difference between them and the 3.42s will still give you slightly better mileage. Gears will effect the top speed of your car depending on how far you go up, but unless you're on the autobahn, I wouldn't worry about top speed.

Re: 3.42's or 3.73's?

A. 3.73 if you aren't too concerned with mileage.
B. Yes, it lowers the theoretical top speed.
C. Yes.
D. Gear install is around $200-$300 if I recall correctly.
E. Yes and No. You need to fix the speedometer which is done with tuning software.

As mentioned though, I think the stall converter is better for you if you are worried about gas mileage.
Check out this link.
http://www.f-body.org/gears/
You can put in your stock info using the pull down menu, and then change the gears and directly compare the RPM changes from different gear sets.

Re: 3.42's or 3.73's?

Same link. Just use a different selection from the drop down menu there. If you car isn't there, you need to look up your tranny gear ratios.

Why does anyone care about top speed??
I can see making sure you aren't topping out your gears in the 1/4, but who cares about your possible top speed determined by gears.
I mean my top of 6th gear at 6700 RPM's would be 249 MPH...even with the 4.11's. But I did need to know where 4th gear would top out.

700R4 =

1 - 3.06:1
2 - 1.63:1
3 - 1:1
4 - 0.7:1

Any and all years, including TH700R4, 4L60, 4L60E.

The final drive ratio of your car can be determined by looking at the Service Parts Identification label somewhere near the spare tire area. The codes generally start with a G -

G80 = limited slip
G87 = 8.5" ring
G89 = 7.5" ring

What's the G-code?

Re: 3.42's or 3.73's?

If you have 2.73's and you want to switch to 3.42's or 73's youll need to get a new carrier/ gears. This is expensive.....unless you do it yourself

Re: 3.42's or 3.73's?

I might be wrong but im pretty sure that it is the 2.42 gears that uses a diffrent carrier. the 2.73 should use the same as the 3.73.

I had to get a new carrier with my old 2.73's to get the 3.73's
