Will washers mess my battery up?

On my 99 lesabre battery the negative cable hole has been stripped and the screw connecting the cables will only tighten if I put 3 or 4 washers inbetween.Will this mess up my battery or cause any electrical problems with my car? The battery is fairly new and Id hate to have to replace it becuase of that.Thanks for any advice..

I am not sure that I understand how adding washers would help overcome “stripped” threads in the battery. If you add washers, you are in effect reducing the number of threads available to secure the terminal. This seems bassackwards! Are you sure that the terminal bolt is not too long & therefore bottoms out in the female threads before tightening the terminals?

Also you need to be aware that the bolt does'nt bottom out too far or you will be in danger of going through the battery causing an acid leak. You say the battery is fairly new? does it still have a warranty?

Also, washers will not hurt your battery nor will they hinder battery output.
