Front wheel speed sensor

Do I need to buy an entire hub assembly to get the speed sensor for the front wheel? I have the standard lights on (SVS, ABS, PCS, and TRAC OFF) and found the dangling culprit. I haven't pulled the tire off to see what is left there, but I am assuming the worst.

dangling culprit? that doesnt sound good, nothing should be dangling, unless the wiring to the sensor has come off its brackets, in which case that alone could be your problem.

As for the sensor itself, yes you will need a new bearing assembly, im in the same boat myself as a matter of fact.

I went the slightly used route and got one with 17,000 miles on it for 60 bucks with a 90-day warranty from Ed Morad over at ClubGP. If youre interested you can shoot him an e-mail at [email protected]

The cheapest ive seen them new is about 100 bucks from RockAuto, and thats the el cheapo version.

Be sure you check the wiring really good before you break down and replace the whole thing.

Dangling culprit=wiring harness for the speed sensor. It has been pulled out of the wheel hub. I will have to look today to see if I can just re-connect the wiring and get by with that until the hub goes.

What is funny to me is that I also have a 1988 Merkur Scorpio and I thought THAT thing was full of little problems. I bought this Oldsmobile thinking it would be a much more reliable and efficient car. Thus far, I haven't been all that impressed.

i had a problem with my 2000 Intrigue 3.5 GLS, where my Trac Control ABS (I believe the trac control relies on the ABS) and SVS lights were on. One day as I was changing my front brakes, I noticed a wire dangling from the wheel hub, the thing somehow got severed. There wasn't enough exposed wire coming out of the plug for me to reconnect the wire to it so i just cut the plug that was on the unsevered end of the wire off and spliced the two ends together hoping that i matched the correct (there are 2) wires together with electrical tape. After I did this, I started my car, and the problem was fixed, no more lights. Hope this helps

I bet that took care of the lights, but then did the ABS work on that wheel? My guess is no. I like your idea of getting rid of the lights and hadn't thought of that, so thank you for that. Then I just have to get a hub assembly.

As I guessed, the sensor is part of the dang assembly. Is this a job that a Saturday afternoon mechanic can undertake? On the surface it doesn't look that complicated.

well a Monday afternoon mechanic just finished doing the exact same thing, and personally i thought it was pretty dang easy.

theres a thread that should give you an idea of what youre up against, the hub puller isnt absolutely necessary, but it could make things a lot easier.

mine basically just popped off when i took the bolts out, but some of them can be a lot more stubborn.
