85 camry transmission
son said his rpms would go up high before the transmission would take off from the light to get it home. reverse works fine but nothing in forward now that it is home.
code reader gives 1 flash which should mean no problems.... fluid levels are fine any ideas? oh yea, it's an automatic

How long has it been since the fluid was changed or the transmission flushed?

thanks for the answer, decided to start from scratch and the basics- in the middle of changing and flushing system and new filter.. let you know if this takes care of it.

ok, flushed transmission and new filter, very little debris in bottom of pan if any at all. still goes into reverse strongly and when you put it into drive,2,low it acts like it wants to go with slight change of sound from rpms however still nothing. any ideas???? car only has 85000 miles on it....
??????????

you probably should check the line pressure on the trans with a pressure gauge. (EG. Trans Pressure Gauge) There is usually a test port accessible from the wheel well area but I'm not sure for your car.
Obtain the specs for your car from the trans service manual and see what sort of pressure you are getting in drive. Also check the trans in L1, L2 to see if any of those are working. If reverse is working, your trans oil pump is probably ok since that usually requires the highest pressure to engage. Also check your shift linkage and cable to make sure it's not in between gears when trying to get into drive. Most likely one of your clutch paks has failed or you have a bad valve body. Does this trans have shift solenoids? Was any slippage noticed before it refused to move in drive at all? dave mc

thanks, son said it was high reving the day he brought it home with problems, since he is 16, it was probably slipping awhile before i was informed. will test pressures etc... thanks for replying

Worst case you can get a replacement JDM transmission; have the teenager help change it so he will get a lesson in what it takes to maintain a vehicle. In spite of the pain I think it helped reinforce the point for my teenager.....
