Slightly pissed off but not surprised
So, apparently the GVR4 i bought wasn't entirely a GVR4. yes, it has the badge and the vin checks out, but the owner previous to the guy i bought it from put a non-turbo block in the fricking car.
yeah NON-turbo, so as soon as the boost had spiked to 20psi it cracked piston #4 and all the rings were trash. non turbo blocks weren't built for that! Also the intake manifold was held on by an oil return line bolt. something tells me the guy before him was a dumbass, but i'm not surprised considering everything else the guy before me and i have had to fix on the fricking car. I am a little pissed off because i bought a turbo block so i didn't have to worry, and it was running a non-turbo block all along which i already have!!! dumbass ricers.

Re: Slightly pissed off but not surprised
Oh that shit blows! Trust me dude I know how you feel. The Starion i bought was rebuilt with crappy quality bits and blew up on me twice before I decided to trash the block and buy a new longblock.
I payed over 1500.00 bucks on repairs till I broke down and ordered a new one for about 2K. So are you gonna keep it and order the turbo shortblock or trash the project?

Re: Slightly pissed off but not surprised
So you had the VR4 out and you didn't call me? Or was the guy building your block street testing it? Or was he rebuilding the block and found the problem?
That fucking sucks dude, I would flip shit if I found that out after all the work you have put into it. I would find teh guy who screwed it up, and end him. We can sick my new cat on his testicles if you want, shes a fiesty one!

Re: Slightly pissed off but not surprised
umm whats the difference between a turbo block and non turbo block? Liters? Displacement? cylinders? head? look of the engine? Is this something that you should of noticed when you bought the car, or do both engines look identical?

Re: Slightly pissed off but not surprised
With 4G63s, its all internal work, like teh 2JZ-GE vs the 2JZ-GTE. The engine had the turbo on it, just sitting there, it was a cute little baby turbo. But unless you open it up, I don't think there are any visual external differences between a NA 4G63 that has been turboed and a stock turbod 4G63.

If he doesn't mean the short block, then the turbo block probably has thicker cylinder walls then a N/A block. Probably would have more main bolts too.

Re: Slightly pissed off but not surprised
well, the turbo 4g63 block has :
oil squirters stronger pistons and a couple other small differences. essentially though, the blocks are the same. The problem was, when the previous owner had the car, he upped the boost to 15 psi thinking that the engine could handle it, and then a slew of problems ensued. Brake pads were put on backwards, exhaust leak at the manifold, shitty o2 dump, 14b turbo with a sticking wastegate, bad water pump, and now to find out that the block wasn't a turbo block and didn't have the turbo pistons. the head though was a turbo head, so the only weak point were the pistons which are soon to be replaced. The guy was pulling the engine apart when he found the rings on the first cylinder he was dismantling and noticed the crack in the piston. He didn't get the engine into another car and take it for a ride... that's a lot of work!!! luckily payday just passed and i have the money to go pickup a new set of pistons and rings. unluckily, school is due just after next payday, so i'm short until after everything is together ughThere have been people that have threatened this guy before because he is a dumbass, and those people are even more likely to do something about it than musashi when french people sit on his car. ![]() I've already got too much time invested to "trash" the project. Right now that can't happen whatsoever. The guy building the engine picked me up a bare block with oil squirters thinking that's all i needed, so i've essentially got everything i needed to get this thing going, minus the pistons... updates to come.
