Transmission Fluid change write up

I’ve seen a few posts around here about transmission fluid changes and leaks afterwards so lets get a few things out in the open.

1. Name brand Dextron III or newer 6.5qts usually gets it close but have 8qts around for good measure

2. Get a quality name brand filter

3. Don’t bend the thermo valve under the filter. If it falls off the bend goes up towards the trans to hold the other flat piece up against the case. The bend is not centered so make sure you put it back up so the bend contacts the other small tin plate

4. It is not necessary to replace the filter seal in the case as long as the filter has to be firmly pushed into place if not replace it. To replace it use a flat screw driver to collapse one side of the seal and pop it out. A large socket that fit’s the out side diameter of the seal works great for a driver.

5. Clean out pan, clean the reusable gasket and magnet. The magnet goes on the passenger side next to the pan rail, some pans have a line pressed into it so it would go on the passenger side of that line.

6. Your transmission comes with a reusable pan gasket DO NOT DISCARD IT! Make your trans happy and reuse it!

7. Torque spec is 115-120 INCH LBS.

8. A correct fluid level is in the cross hatch when the engine is warm. Having the fluid level above the cross hatch area by 1/8 to 1/4 inch when the transmission is HOT is ok and is actually good

9. If a pan bolt gets stripped out the size it M6 or M8 X 1.25


Tools needed..
Deep 10MM socket
Ratchet
Inch lbs. torque wrench (not required but nice to have)
A large flat blade screwdriver comes in handy to pry out the old filter and collapse the filer seal if need be
Hammer (used to collapse filter seal.)

Troy, why is it they use a reusable gasket?

I know when you purchase a new filter, it does not come with a new gasket.
Even heard some people say they had a hard time finding a new gasket when they needed one.

I'm not sure why GM used a reusalbe gasket but it was a good Idea. The only place I have gotten a new gasket is from a dealer.

They are a rubbery type, the reusable ones.
I prefer cork, but sometimes they seep trany fluid untill they dry out, then they leak because they are loose

Yep the black rubber coated ones are tits throw those cork ones in the trash can
