b20b in civic?
i was wondering, would a b20b yield good results in a 97 civic coupe? i'm not talking about the crvtec. just dropping in a stock b20. what 1/4 mile times should i expect? also how much should i expect to pay for a complete swap? has anybody here ever done this, if so, how do you like it? the reason im asking is because im in need of a swap b/c my d16 might be fried. any help would be great, thanks

I don't think the head on the B20 will clear the hoodline in a civic. That's one of the reasons ppl swap in a vtec head.
Here is some info on it: http://www.purehonda.org/nuke/html/m...rticle&artid=5 |

is the head much bigger than that of a vtec head? i've heard of people doing the swap with stock b20 head and no problems with clearance.

I don't really know. I got all I know about it off of the web. Try that crvtec site, I forget the actual address. and maybe go to google and type b20 engine swap, or just b20z and see what you get. There is bound to be a decent amount of info on the net about it. Happy hunting!
P.S. let us know how it goes if you do end up doing it. I was thinking about getting a b20z block myself, but haven't found a deal I can afford yet.

Here is a B20b on sale at Ebay. See how high the intake manifold is above the engine? I'm doubting that'll fit in a civic.

oh i see. thanks alot for the info. so, that is why people swap in the vtec heads in order to use the vtec intake manifold.

I found some more info. This guy used the head on the b20b like you want to, but he swapped an integra LS intake onto it (in his Civic). So apparently it can be done with some modification. He said he will post the install pics later.
http://hybrid2.honda-perf.org/tech/b20/ In the B20 Tech section there are some pics of the original manifold next to the LS one he installed, and you can see the difference. |

the head on the b20 and the head on the b18 are essentially the same so therefore the intake manifold from teh b18b non-vtec motor will bolt directly onto the head of the b20. it is not the head that is the problem in the swap it is the intake manifold. they call the intake on the b20 a giraffe because of its length. by changing the manifold you alter the performance characteristics of the motor slightly thus changing the hp and torque numbers to an unknown value. i would guess they would be larger due to the faster route through the intake. I have been considering this swap for sometime. my ultimate goal is FI of the turbo manner. i am thinking it would be best for me to gradually increase the amount of poewr i have on tap to adjust my driving style accordingly. I am not sure of the C/R difference in teh b20b and the b20z. i think it is 8.8:1 and 9.2:1 correct...both of which are in the safe range for boost although 9.2: is creeping up on the high side for major boost. i was planning on LS tranny and ecu.

i have read a write up on a guy who did a stock B20 in a 94 hatch. he said it was not a speed demon but it would get up pretty good. I think i recall him saying it felt like a low 15/high 14 second car. i would have to think this is correct. Driving a Civic with a B20 must be nice because it seeems like you would have a lot more useable power at low RPM.

Does it have the stock B20 intake manifold on it?

it'll fit in just fine. my buddies have a whole bunch of B20s in their civics and there isn't any hood clearance problems. it's just like installing a B18a/b into a civic basically.

so b20 fits with stock intake manifold? i figured out that my car needs a new engine, and my d series is dying pretty soon. so does anyone have the prices for a complete b20 swap into a civic or a complete h22 swap into a civic? anyone have experience. if so let me know.

I just went outside and looked at my moms B20 in her CRV, her intake manifold doesnt look like it sticks up any higher than a B18 or b16 manifold. I also dont know which B20 is in her car though. Its a 2000 CRV Ex.

probably the b20z. does anyone have any price comparisons between the b20b/z and h22a swaps? it has to be 97 or newer model year engines. also, if both were stock engines which would be faster? i am guessing h22a but someone wanna prove me wrong? thanks for all the replies.
