Tran fluid leaking

I've got tranny fluid leaking about a few drops a night, enough to make a mess of my driveway.
I had one mechanic look at it and he tells me thats its coming from where the filler tube connects to the tranny.
I've looked under the car myself and its not the pan or casket.So I'm guessing what he's telling me is true.
Does this sound right? what would be involved to repair this?

If the mechanic did a close inspection then he may be right but it sounds weird for ATF to be coming out of the part where the dipstick tube mates to the tranny. Other possibility is ATF coming out of the vent or leaking side cover gasket. ATF leaking from these areas would run right back to the area of the dipstick tube.

As to cost.

BTW - Have you checked the tranny fluid level.

Ya its low thats why I'm thinking about getting it fixed,also I have an interlock drive way and its making a mess.
I'm going to take it to another guy now and see what he says.
I've been trying not to spend any money lately but I guess I have no choice.

Thats sounds good Wylie. I know what you mean but there are times the wallet has to come out. It is always good to get more than one opinion and estimate for repair. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

There is a seal at the base of the dipstick that could have deteriorated (GM#1259475), but I agree with Bob that it's an odd place for a leak to develop and not very common to occur.

OK I just got back from the second mechanic he actually let me take a look at it.
The tranny pan casket was sweating pretty bad and the seal around the oil plug was leaking.
Tighten up the tranny pan
Topped up the tranny fluid
Oil change and replace the oil pug.
= $25
Funny the first guy wanted to rebuild the motor.
I went to the pressure washer and sprayed it all off underneath and so far no leaks.

Wow Wylie, thats a big difference from the original diagnosis. I don't think I'd ever go back to the first guy again that wanted to screw with your dip stick tube.

Second opinions are always a great idea. Many places offer a free inspection, so why not let them tell you what they think. Good job, sounds like you saved a ton.

Timely thread for me. I just changed the tranny oil on a 95 GP about 2 months ago. I was wary about overtightening the bolts (10MM bolts) but made them as tight as I could with the new supplied gasket. AOK until this past month--find the tranny leaking and pan looks wet. I figured I overtightened the bolts and prepared to reset/check the pan and reuse the old rubber steel gasket I retained. Just minutes before I was going to do the job, I took a moment to check the bolts--all loose--enough to take a half turn about! How can this happen? Do you need to use locktite on these? I tightened them up and leak stopped--now I figure I will have to recheck this work again. I'm baffled. Otherwise, this first trans job ever went well. I want to do my other vehicles, but the GP seems like a warning to a novice.

With GM's rubber/steel ply re-useable gasket, it's best to tighten the bolts to spec with a torque wrench. If you don't, the uneven torque load can cause the bolt to come loose. Loc-tite shouldn't be necessary, but it wouldn't hurt anything either. Just make sure you don't use the high strength that says heat is necessary for removal.
