|
drive shaft won't come out
it,s 91 geo metro,I,m trying to change the trrany seal on passenger side,but the half shaft won,t pop out
 .I used long screw driver,pry bar (17" long) it won't pop out,I tried the driver side while ago,and it was piece of cake, but this one gave me hard time ,any ideas,any help,that what can cause the problem and,or,how can I take it out,the seal leaks crazy,even though I had it changed few month ago when I put two new shaft for both side.I apreciate any help,need to be done for friday sep/09/06 for my work,please pitch in if you can.Thanks alot in advance

I had a little trouble with my 94. I ended up turning the shaft about 1/4 turn and trying again; after a couple of times of this I hit the right spot and it came right out.

I tried everything was said here still no hope any other way I can take it out? please help,drive shaft is rebuild one from A1 cardon I bought from shucks auto supply,anyone else might problem with this brand?is it common problem with A! cardon? the other side pops out easy thogh

Have you removed the nut from hub end and the splines from the hub so there is nothing else holding the axle in place? If so then I suggest getting an extra set of hands to keep things aligned (maybe you are loosing your force to off center prying...) and getting a bigger hammer (or in this case pry bar). you are talking about the nut that needs 129LB of torque on it, yes I did,I even took the ball joint out so the shaft is completly loose and have all the room ,used two pry bar on both side of the shaft,I even tried big pickle fork,by me and my body together,so even force applied on both side,there was no luck,I can work on the car wed and thu,agian but I need to know,how to attack the problem,I cann't do the same thing and expect different result.Anyone else wants to chim in?

How big are the prybars you are using. I've found that using my 2' prybar it requires a good deal of force to pop them out. The manual shows them using a screwdriver - not sure if that would work.
Other suggestions - since one side came out you can try shining a flashlight into the differential and see if you can find out if anything is jamming it. Also another thing you can try is to remove the boot from the inner joint by cutting the retaining band. Once the boot is out the tri-pot spider should slide out of the housing leaving the spider and the splined shaft in the diff. You can then try using a puller to extract the shaft out. Note that this will probably wreck the spider joint beyond repair so this should be a last resort.

If you've got one side out, why not pass a steel rod or something else that can take a beating and use a hammer and push it out rather than pull it out. I've taken a lot of these axles out and they can be stubborn. I've always been able to use the prybar technique. Good Luck!

Sorry my last post was badly worded I guess. What I was saying was to make things easy remove the boot retaining ring and then slip out the rest of the driveshaft out (including the tri-pot spider) from the "tulip" housing leaving behind the housing and the spline shaft. Then get a puller and use the center bolt to push through the diff but the force of the puller legs (which should be between the spider housing and the transmission) may extert too much force and damage the housing. However, doing this or hitting the splne shaft can damage it anyway - if it is really stuck this is a risk that may have to be taken. Pushing rather than hitting is a better idea.

Just pulled both axles on my 94 using a ball joint separator "pickle fork" as a pry bar. What I noticed was that if I put constant pressure againt the axle it didn't want to come out but if I braced the pickle fork against the back of the tulip housing and "popped" the picked fork with a fair amount of oomph the axles literally flew out. Would have been a good idea to have a second set of hands so I wouldn't have been subject to the potential spearing action....
