1993 ssei abs & track light on

We hit a bump and our ABS light and trac off light came on and now nether functions. Our repair shop said it is our ABS pump but I think it is a wheel speed sensor. Could it possible be the ABS pump???

Re: 1993 ssei abs & track light on

I have 95 Bonneville with ABS only. The ABS system was engaging then disengaging causing a safey concern. I remove the ABS main fuse to resolve the intermittent issues. Had a mechanic diagnose what the issues was, and he was able to detemrine that the speed sensor was bad. The speed sensor on the '95's is part of the Wheel hub assembly, and it cost close to $ 400, parts & labor to fix. So, I decided to live without ABS. If the wheel bearing ever goes on that side, then I will have my ABS systems back.

I would suggest, just disengaging ABS and Tracking system.

Did the shop actually scan the car, or are they diagnosing over the phone? It's highly possible that the hub bearing is the problem, as the ABS wheel speed sensor is part of the hub, as JJ mentioned. The vehicle uses the wheel speed sensor signal for both ABS and traction control functions, so it will disable them if no wheel speed sensor signal is received.

Re: 1993 ssei abs & track light on

I took the car to a local goodyear shop and they stated that was the problem. So I found a ABS pump from a 94 ssei and was going to have it installed but when I bought it the place said that pump almost never goes out and it might be the wheel speed sensor, do you think I should take it to a dealership????

Re: 1993 ssei abs & track light on

How did the GoodYear shop determine that the pump was the problem ? Did they tell you what codes were being stored ? I would bring it a Autozone they will check the code for free.

I would suggest that you bring the car to a good qualifed mechainc (ask around or to dealershop), that have a scanning a tool and have the complete ABS and Tracking system check. The wheel sensors are easy to diagnose and should the first place to check because of the location. Did the GoodYear shop check the wheel bearings ? The wheel sensors sit on top of the bearings. If the bearing are bad, this could cause your wheel sensor to fail
and disengage you ABS and Tracking systems.

I personnally would go without the ABS and tracking systems and disconnect the fuse.

Lets us know how you made out

Re: 1993 ssei abs & track light on

2 things:
1. Auto-Zone cannot pull ABS codes, it takes a different type of scan tool
2. The wheel speed sensors are actually an integral part of the hub assembly, they do not set up on top.

Now, I would take the car to another facility, or get Goodyear to give you the specific codes they pulled and post them here. Goodyear service writers get paid for the parts they sell, and most likely wouldn't install your used part anyway. They have a tendency to sell the high dollar part, even if it isn't what you need.

If you have a little mechanical ability and a digital multimeter, you can check the wheel speed sensors yourself. They should read about 1000 ohms when measured across the two pins on the bearing's connector. Also do a physical check of the harnesses on the car going to the sensors, as they can corrode and break.
