idle problem

about 2 weeks ago I started to notice an idle drop once in a while and it would rev up by itself to keep from shutting off, and about 3-4 days ago it died on me at a stop light. after that I took it home and changed the battery for a new one and now it idles at 500 rpm (before it was 7-800 rpm) steady and some times it would die after the car got hot. last night after a couple minutes of driving the car died on a turn and after I got it running again it died a couple minutes later.

now I am working from 10 pm - 6 am and from 8 am - 2 pm everyday and have no time to look over the car or go and get it checked out.

any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

edit: I have a 92 SL

Re: idle problem

So does it hold a steady idle now...all the time? Also do you have a TT or NA? At first it sounded like a bad IAC. If you do a search for 'IAC' you will find plenty.

http://www.stealth316.com/2-isc-iac.htm

That is how to remove and clean it. The fact that you are now holding a steady idle though, makes me wonder if it might be something else. Anyway do the search and you will find plenty. Clean the IAC and see if it improves. You may need to replace it, and then you may need to reset the base idle.

If you have a TT, it would also be a good idea to pressure test for boost leaks.

Re: idle problem

Yeah, check your IAC and maybe consider getting a used/new one. My IAC crapped out on me this past summer and I bought a new OEM one from http://www.dsmisc.com/. But uh...I never did figure out how to reset the base idle though.

Re: idle problem

slade...I told you how to. You can do it, just man up and quit worrying about screwing anything up and do it. I know you can. <--Slade's #1 fan. In all seriousness, you aren't gonna break anything, just do it!

Re: idle problem

First clean/swap the IAC, see if automatically sets itself correctly. If it doesn't then I'll dig up the link. Warm idle should be ~700rpms.

LOL I did! I tried it a couple times and it wouldn't work. I tried the way in the manual and your interpretation of it and someone elses on 3si too. Hehe So yeah, don't know what the deal is...I was eventually told to buy a data logger but it's idling fine so I'm not gonna bother with it even if it is probably off a bit.

And uh...YAY, I have a fan! LOL
