Pulling motor with tranny?

I have a 1995 blazer 4.3 W 4X4 that I need to replace, real bad knock. Would like to have the tranny bench tested , so can I just pull the both of them together? Any little tricks I need to know. Thanks Fred

Re: Pulling motor with tranny?

This can be tricky, and dangerous, if your not careful. If its a 4x4, then you'll have to take the transfer case off first to lessen the load. I have never pulled the engine tranny together on a s series truck, I can assume it can be done without too much trouble. If you are pulling the tranny though, you might as well just rebuild the tranny. If its still working alright, just change the clutches, and go through it. Good luck, sounds like you have a lot of work ahead of you.

Yeah, the only way to pull them out as a unit is to pull the front transfer case first...Otherwise it's too tight of a fit... 2WD's are easier in this respect.

Re: Pulling motor with tranny?

You have to pull the front clip apart, pull out the front differential, and transfer case, trans crossmember, remove motor mounts, all wiring and hoses and pull it straight out. I did it on my 87 4x4 when i sold the 2.8l. It ws easier than pulling everything apart since i was rebuilding the trans to handle 450+ on a daily im not planning on pushing more than 300 through it so it should be fine.

Its not severely hard but it can be done.

Don't ever look at cars as just imports or domestics. Just because a car is made in a certain country doesn't mean that it is anything like another car from that country. An example of this is Mitsubishi reliability, just because they are Japanese doesn't mean that they are as reliable as a Honda or Toyota.
