85 2.5L - no reverse - everything else OK

Alright, I got an 85 bird with the 2.5L (4cyl) and the problem is - there is no reverse. When I shift to reverse, I can feel the car start to move backwards but it just barely moves. If I try to give it gas, the engine only revs and the car goes no where. All foward gears seem to work fine, I even drove the car 200 miles to get it home and foward gears seem fine. Plenty of fluid in tranny and i even drained a bit out to add a bottle of LUCAS (tranny stop slip version)

Now, my question is, is it possible to adjust the bands or something to bring reverse back or is this tranny toast?

Thanks a bunch for any help you can give!!

Sounds like the tranny is done, as far as reverse goes.

For some reason I'm having a brain fart as to if there is a band for reverse or not which is what i'd say it is.

How does the fluid look?

Re: 85 2.5L - no reverse - everything else OK

Ok, trann fluid is fine. I have checked with a local dealer and they say that there is no band that can be tightened - only options are rebuild or replace. As far as the rest of you who are curious about the 4 banger - it gets good gas mileage and is a very very common motor found in lots of GM products. Unfortunately - the tranny's are crap and i can not locate one within 100 miles of here. Price for used one shipped to my address is around $500 but who wants to spend that kind of money knowing there is a chance that it will be junk when it arrives (and have to pay return shipping, assuming that the salvage yard will actually send another or return my cash)

At any rate - I appreciate all of you who took the time to read this and good luck to you on future endeavors.
