Need recommendations for tune up
I have 99 GC Sport w/ the 3.8L engine. Has 85K miles and need a tune-up. Need recommendation on plugs and wires. Also, what's the easiest way to reach the 3 plugs in the back.
My friend that has a GC told me to go from underneath. I tried but can't seem to reach that far up and back. According to alldata.com it says to take off the alternator to get the 3 plugs. Do I really need to do all that to change the plugs? Well any recommendations would really be appreciated. Thanks |

Re: Need recommendations for tune up
"Do I really need to do all that to change the plugs?" Yes, pretty close anyway. As I recall I only rolled the alternator forward and didn't remove it. That gets you to the passenger side rear plug only. The other two rear plugs were had from underneath. Reach through the area where the exhaust runs off the manifold. Yes, it helps to have long arms. Don't recall using anything but a ratchet and socket.
When I changed the plugs at 116K miles for the first and only time, they looked like they could have gone another 116K. They were platinum Champions. I have Autolite platinums in it know. 190K miles and it's running like a top with no mpg drop and the original plug wires. 96 GC 3.8ltr. |

Re: Need recommendations for tune up
Yep.. I just did this 3 days ago.. kind of a pain but on my 1997 AWD 3.8L GC there is no way to get at these from the bottom... so just take the alternator out and reach around.. pretty easy really.. I was going to take the alt, bracket out also but the bottom bolt that holds the belt tensioner on.. I wasn't able to reach it from the top... so just left it.. and I was able to reach all 3 of the back plugs... pulling the wires off was not easy on the 2nd and 3rd one.. but it can be done...
