What do you guys suggest?

First off, let me say that my knowledge of anything audio is spotty to none so you may have to dumb things down a bit for me, lol.

I'm in the market to get some new sound equipment for about $350 plus the cost of labor (I would really rather have someone else do it for now, spare time is just a little hard to come by right now with college and work). This is my first time going for an amp/subs but I've done speakers and hu's and other basic stuff like that. I went to cartoys and they suggested a 250w JL amp ($150) with a single 10" pioneer ($100 on sale, normally $200, i forget the model name). Bestbuy suggested a pair of 10" punches but they are $250 just for the subs and box and that would leave me no money for the amp and install (unless i want to splurge a bit) but to be entirely honest i wasnt that impressed with the sound quality.

So i'd like to hear what you guys think. At this point id rather get the single 10 with the JL amp but I'm concerned that when I hear it in my car I wont get quite the volume with just one 10".

I've already got a pair of infinity door speakers (got the car with it, i think they are kappas) and a pair of 6x9's in the back. I listen mostly to rock and techno so while i really like being loud, it takes a back seat to sound quality and response. The headunit I'm running is an old Eclipse 5405.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Re: What do you guys suggest?

you won't get that "ground pounder" bass with 1 10" ...... but I have 2 8" subs that blend well with the 5 1/4" mids and I have plenty of bass output for most pop music.

Re: What do you guys suggest?

Yeah, it's all in what you want and what you listen to and how you want to listen to it. Paul is right that you won't get a "pounder" out of one 10" but if done right, can be a great set up. The main thing is to try to stay away from cheap cookie cutter speaker boxes. You'll want an enclosure made for your sub AND your vehicle.

Re: What do you guys suggest?

actully i will have to disagree unless he wants sound qoulity too. . if he got the 10" kicker solox then he is talking 2500 rms for 1 ten inch sub. but the bad part the cheapest i have found 1 is 500 $ on ebay and that was the lowest.

Re: What do you guys suggest?

how would i go about building a box for my sub? the link in the faq is broken. is there a way to figure out the best cubic centimeters it should be?

so will i even be able to feel any rumble from one 10" infinity with a good box? like i said, i listen to alot of rock and techno so i'm going for more of an emphasis on definition than sheer volume but if the bass wont be there id rather go the extra dollar and get what i'm really looking for.

Re: What do you guys suggest?

I hate car toys and wouldn't by anything from there, thats my 2 cents. They've screwed one to many people over that I've know. They sold my Fiancee the wrong harness for her taraus (and those harnesses are expensive) on purpse, hoping she would bring it back in to have them do it (she'd told them I would do it). So she was out a buttload of money and they didn't give a rats ass it was the wrong harness, "let them do it." Whaever, I've also known 2 people they've screwed over on jobs there pretty bad, and one whom they really shafted in bussiness deals. I've known one to many people who's been screwed by them in jobs, bussiness deals or prodcuts to recommend them to someone. They also tend to keep their prices (non-sale especially) pretty high. If you want to go there, great, but I'd look for another stereo shop I could go to in the area before going to car toys. Heck, I'd by off crutchfield or car domain before going in there (both tend to be authorized internet re-sellers of their products). Car Toys is Shady or Shisty if you ask me. The Neon sign and the checkered install floor may look good, but don't be fooled. I'd go somewhere else for your equipment.

Damn, I'm sorry to hear that man. In that case I'd only buy part of what I was getting for the set-up from there, whichever part eqauls $200 bucks in store credit, no more. I'd go somewhere else for the rest.

Re: What do you guys suggest?

yeah, im getting the install done at best buy cuz they are like 40 bux cheaper than cartoys and i need some dynamat and a new dash kit (i kinda broke my trim peice on accident, lol). i think im gonna have to end up getting the amp and sub at CT tho. from what im hearing from my other friends with 10" setups, a good 10 with a good box and a good amp will do the trick just fine. or if it doesnt i could always just upgrade later.

Re: What do you guys suggest?

Screw that get the amp from car toys and get a single 12" infinity perfect off ebay. My friend has a 3000gt with a single 12" eclipse and it surprised me it hits pretty hard. You can get the infiitys off ebay for around 100-150 shipped NIB. And that jl amp is more than enough to push that sub. I know there are better things but this keeps the infinity setup and it should hit pretty hard.

Don't ever look at cars as just imports or domestics. Just because a car is made in a certain country doesn't mean that it is anything like another car from that country. An example of this is Mitsubishi reliability, just because they are Japanese doesn't mean that they are as reliable as a Honda or Toyota.

Re: What do you guys suggest?

Are you planning on using the $200 store credit and 350 or is the 200 included in the final 350? If it's in addition then I'd say get one of their alpine cd player headunits to replace the old headunit you have now and then get the subs and amp somewhere else and installed somewhere else or pay one of your friends that can do it cheaper. If the 200 is included in the total you want to spend then get the infinity kappa perfect sub that they have and wiring harness or something and the amp somewhere else.
