Air Pump?
I bought an Actron DTC reader and it came with a CD that contains all the DTC codes sorted by vehicle and vehicle options... For my 3.8L Impala I can choose one of the following:
4T65 Int MDE SW with airpump 4T65 Int MDE SW without airpump Call me a dummy(!), but I'm not sure if my car has an airpump or not... How can I tell??

Re: Air Pump?
Check your car's SPID (Service Parts IDentification) label in the trunk for the code NC8 (make sure the Vin# on the label matches your car's Vin in case the trunk lid has been changed) . If you live in a Green State, CA/MA/VT/NY/CT, then your car most likely has the air pump.

Re: Air Pump?
Yep, amongst a bunch of other codes, NC8 is on the list... I live in NYS and the car originally was bought in New Jersey... I've never actually looked at that sticker... It has a big long list of codes...

Re: Air Pump?
If you ever need to know something VIN specific, PM me with the last 8 of the vin or the 3-digit code, and I'll decipher it for you.
Any GM vehicle 91-newer, I have vin info on.

Re: Air Pump?
I do not know what they mean by with or without air pump, Air pump, in late model cars is a term for the actual engine. If you have a tuner like from HP Tuners where you can go in and adjust your LTFT and STFT edit your VE tables, they use the term air pump for the engine. I only remeber cars from the 70's that had an actuall "pump" to pump out the crankcase fumes.

Re: Air Pump?
Green state CA/MA/VT/NY/CT cars have an electric pollution control pump that helps recirculate unburned hydrocarbons. It is located in the left front fenderwell and will have some hoses running to and from that are about the same size as heater hoses. Most of us wouldn't know what it is because our cars don't have one.

Re: Air Pump?
I took a quick glance in the 3.4 and 3.8L factory service manual for 2003. I can not find any mention of a air pump. How is the pump driven ?
I looked again in the HP Tuners program, the program for my VCM 3.4L ( PCM) there is not an option, for someone elsess tune for I can only assume is a 3.8L there is a " air pump" ECT disable , so you can set the pump to disable at a coolant temp. I never checked I went a lomg with something wrong that somebody typed. I thought it was strange that the poster said it asked for air pump or non air pump. ...after more research, i found out what the pump does, it injects clean air into the exhaust at start up to lower emissons, when the cat is cold, b4 it warms up Last edited by tractorboy; 09-05-2006 at 09:52 PM. |
