Amp recommendations

I just got some new equipment installed consisting of a Kenwood Excelon Head and a set of Polk 4x6s. The guy who helped me pick them said that they would be much better off being powered by an amp instead of being powered off of the head. so i'm thinking i'll be in the need of a 4 channel amp that would be able to power these and eventually a set of 6x9s in the back.

They are the MMC460s. they need a continuous 50watts going to them which is the max for my head at being a 4x50. if kenwood isn't being overly optomistic about how much it puts out. They peak at 100 watts. I'm thinking about uprgarding the 6x9s in the back with polk MMC690s. They have a continuous 100 watts and peak at 300. So I'm gonna need an amp with the capability to handle these. Help?

head unit manufacturers are definitely "fudging" the power numbers ... most put out 15-18 watts RMS per channel of real power. A good 50-75 watt/ch amp should make your new speakers sing.

I was talking to somebody and they suggested going with an amp for the front and an amp for the back. What numbers would I need to run a setup like this. I mean in terms of watts and channels. would a 2x200 be good for the back? I have no clue how to work the front though and it is only the two speakers in the doors.

why run 2 amps for that ? a 4 channel would be just the same, only you have one box instead of 2 to hook up.

would the 6x9s not get the power they need though?

you could also get a 6 channel and bridge the four channels to make 2 100 something watt ones. but that would blow your budget people tend to do that if they already have the amp cause of the cost of a decent 6 channel amp

Almost any 4 channel amp would power your 4 x 6's or 6 x 9's better than the kenwood head unit. Different amps have different power output levels. For example, one amp may put out 35 watts rms X 4 channels at 14.4 volts (140 watts rms) and another may put out 75 watts rms x 4 channels (300 watts rms total). Both will provide a lot cleaner and better sound than off the headunit to your speakers, though the 300 watt rms total one (75watts rms x 4) would provide more power. It's all how much you want to spend and how much power you want to put out. Remember, just because the speakers can handle 100 watts rms doesn't mean you NEED to put out 100 watts RMS to each speaker. I'd look for a good amp I could afford from a good qaulity reputable company. An amp like that should provide plenty of power and make your speakers sound loud and clean/clear as a bell. I'd say a 4 channel 200 watts rms total amp (thats 50 watts a channel x 4) would be fine.

ya, i wouldn't put more power to the back speakers. if they are louder than the fronts it sounds funky. i have my fronts amped (50 rms each) and my rears run off the head unit (~18 rms each).

my problem is that right now I can't even hear the back. It's just an "assault on my right ear drum." that's the best way I can phrase it. the left is putting out sound too, it's just that the angle isn't good for me to be able to hear it.

I was thinking about something like this: 40wrms x 4 amp, and then bridge it into two channels for the front. and then get something that can put 100 wrms x2

what would I be looking at cost wise?
