towing with equinox

I want to tow with my 05 lt equinox. So I installed a new hitch with no problem. Owners manual says I can tow up to 3500 lb. I hooked on to my cargo trailer that ways 2900lb. Took off with no problems. At 65 mph my rpm's are up around 3000. Will this be an issue on a four hour ride? Owners manual says if I have tow package this weight isn't an issue. What does the tow package consist of? Any help would be great. I don't want to kill the motor or transmission. Thanks in advance.

Re: towing with equinox

are you on D or L4?
I towed a utility trailer with about 2k pounds of gravel on the highway on D. with no issues. Sounds like you are on L4 which should only be used if the transaxle keeps going out of Overdrive such as in hills.
Can't help you with the tow package question as my wife's came with the tow package already which I think would only consist of the hitch and wiring as I did not see an additional tranny fluid cooler.
