Shift Locking

I have a 1996 automatic accord LX

Currently when I turn on my car and try to change the shif from parking to anything else (ie reverse) the shift does not move. From messing around I found out that the only way I can make the shift move is if I put a key or something in the shift lock hole, then turn on the car, then press the button and move the shift.

Can you guys/girls help me on what the problem might be and how I could solve it.

thanks

There is a little sensor in the brake linkage under the dash that makes a lock work in the shift linkage in the center console.... You can try to find the switch under the dash and see if it is connecting and then find the one on the shift linkage in the center console.... it will be on the right side of the shifter it is a electric mini ram that unlocks the shift-lock... I don't recomend it but you can bypass it.... mine is!

wassup. you know how when you put your key in the shift lock release, it unlocks the shaft and you can shift where ever you want? i removed the center console, then the black plate, and i looked at what the key presses. it presses a white plastic piece. that plastic peice preses a black tiny plastic lego looking peice. then there was a pin. i "accidently" bent the pin and now i can shift when ever i feel like it, with or without ignition. i wouldn't recomend doing this, easy to jack your car.

ok, either try what shockjon says, or what ive done when we've had cars come in with the same problem is check your brakelamp fuses, if that fuse is blown it automaticaly locks your shifter since it can't tell when your actually pressing on the brake.
