Hey guys I have a 2001 Silverado 4.8 and i was getting sick of my exhaust pipe hanging down 6" below the body of my truck so today i decided to cut it off. Before i had it come out at a 45 degree angle but i cut right after the rear axle so it points down and a little bit angled at my tire but still like a foot away. I have a magnaflow muffler and before i cut it my exhaust seemed to "moan" really loud in the cab but now it "rumbles" and it seems to be quieter. I havent heard it standing outside yet. Does the rubber in the tire absorb the sound? or does it sound the same outside and its just quieter inside because its aimed away from the cab? Any other ideas?

Re: Cut off the tip and exhaust got quieter
You may have tuned to a little different resonance. Sounds to me like hot exaust will be heating your tire with exhaust chemical that will increase deterioration and will increase the amount of carbon monoxide that leaks back into the cab. Exhaust should extend beyond the body.

Eh, he's hardly the first one to ever do a dumped exhaust. Just to be safe take it for a good long haul and check temps underneath to make sure you aren't baking anything.

I think you changed the resonance also. Dumped exhaust won't hurt a thing. Just about everyone w/a show truck dumps thiers. I hate the look of exhaust too, but I'm running mine straight out the back, turned down behind the bumper so no tips show.

Re: Cut off the tip and exhaust got quieter
I had to do something similar on the 2000 Silverado I used to have. Right before a trip, I noticed the exhaust pipe had some rust back by the spare tire. The pipes were routed straight out the back. Anyway,I cut the pipe and stuck on of those universal turndowns on it. Figured I'd get it fixed properly when I returned. Didn't think any more about it until I got home. Well, it wasn't pretty. The heat melted all the wiring loom coverings and the black plastic cover on the bumper for the spare tire and the tube to the tire elevator. Do yourself a favor and route it outside the body.

Re: Cut off the tip and exhaust got quieter
I'm not really worried about it burning anything off cz i checked it and theres nothing around the opening. I was just wondering about the sound. I sorta like how it sounds now tho just wish it was a bit louder.
