changing locks

After I washed the lumina tonight, I noticed that my clearcoat issues on the trunk lid have gotten beyond BAD. Since there isn't anything I can do short of repainting it, I've decided that I'll get a used one from the junkyard. There are several donor cars to choose from so it should be easy. I was wondering if it's possible to change out the locks on the trunk (put my lock assembly in a new deck lid)? If so, what should I be prepared to do?

Re: changing locks

The lock cylinder is riveted in place. You'll have to remove the rear fascia/light/reflector bar to access the lock cylinder. At that point, you have a decision to make:

You can drill the rivets, unbolt the old deck lid, mount and align the new deck, remove that new light/reflector bar and repeat the drilling process, then rivet the original lock cylinder back into the hole in the new deck lid;

OR you can wet sand the clearcoat and feather the edges of of the damage, spray on new urethane clearcoat, allow it to cure, wet sand and buff the clearcoat and adjoining area to blend it and reinstall the trim.

I chose the latter:

Of course, I had to glue the emblems back in place, but that's a different question.

Re: changing locks

not that it matters, but I was referring to my '93 lumina. That sounds like a lot of work. I guess I could get the deck lid from the junkyard and take the key as well. Then I'll have one key for the doors, one for trunk, and one for ignition!!! If there's no key, I guess I could get the VIN and have a key made perhaps. In any case, I want to do something, that lid looks rough! There are about a thousand small spots where the clearcoat is shedding.
