Lightbulb Engine Turns But Refuse to Start!

Hi there,
I've a late 92 Passat Estate (Variant) 1984cc Petrol 8v engine with Digified EFI engine.

I need help with some diagnosis. few days ago, my wife took the car out for some errant and the car stalled. Symptoms are those associated with no fuel i.e. rough running jerky at times then went slient. We topped up the car with fuel again, but she still would not fire up. Ended wit a flat battery and had to buy a tow rope to tow her home.

I've checked the following:
Fuel pump fuse - Ok;
Ignition leads ok;
There is fuel in tank;
No other visible problems....

I suspect that the problem is with a defective fuel pump or a fuel solenoid. As she had 190K miles on the clock without a hitch.... until now...

The question is, how does one check for the correct operation of the pump or solenoid for that matter? I have a Haynes manual, but it does not illustrate fault finding techniques. Are there any other probable causes?

Any suggestion is appreciated.

Cheers,
Ray
