Intermittent Ignition Trouble
Hey everyone,
1996 Jeep Cherokee (Love Her by the way )Problem: Over the last few days/weeks when I turn the key it doesn't turn over. There is no clicking, the lights all come on so the battery is good. I turn the key about 3 or 4 times and then hold it turned. There is about a two second wait and the thing starts up. What I've Tried: Just replaced the starter. Still does it. What should I check next? It doesn't always do it so it's hard to figure out. Any help would be appreciated, Chadrick |

Re: Intermittent Ignition Trouble
I think I would check the ignition switch. Or the wiring.
Do you know how to use a remote starter switch? Try that. |

Re: Intermittent Ignition Trouble
Is it an automatic or a stick shift? If it's an automatic check the neutral safety switch. That usually starts going out and causes the problem that you're having. Search the forum and you'll find alot of information about it.

Re: Intermittent Ignition Trouble
It is a manual transmission. I'll look into the remote starter switch.
Thanks guys. |

Re: Intermittent Ignition Trouble
Keyed cylinder on the column could possibly be the problem.....

Re: Intermittent Ignition Trouble
I found out what it was. There was a security card key added to the 96. I bypassed this and things work fine now.

Re: Intermittent Ignition Trouble
Oh that is a dealership thing. They like to sell a thingy that you have on your keychain or a card that if NOT inserted, will prevent your car from starting. Unfortunatly, sometimes it goes bad, or if the tech does a poor job of splicing it in to the ignition starter circuit it won't start. They use to charge like $250 for this so called security device. Another way to steal or I mean to make a good profit on the sale.
