Well first of all - Im in love with Autocrossing
I even try to do it in my ole junker of a car ![]() Im saving up to get either a 944 Turbo or a 944 Turbo S One of the big advantages of the "s" is abs. And since i plan on this car being my autocrossing car Im wondering how much it will help me improve my times? I know it will some, but im wondering if anybody has experienced autocrossing in a non-abs car - is it much harder? it seems as if it would be much easier to screw up - seeming that you might lock up and not be able to turn - shouldnt the abs allow later braking - but even if it does have a greater advantage - how much of a premium is worth over the normal one?

There's a lot more to the S than just ABS brakes. Plus, an ABS system from that long ago probably isn't nearly as good as the ones we have now.
The 944 would be a cool autoX car (although a lighter 914 would be a better racer). But back to the ABS...it would allow later braking because you can stomp on the pedal without fear of locking the wheels. It doesn't shorten stopping distances much. But an S is much more expensive than a regular 944 turbo (even more with the S2). Seeing that to make it a decent autocrosser you're probably going to do some suspension mods anyways, i'd go for a regular turbo and retrofit ABS. You could find an old ABS system in a junkyard probably.

yes i know there is much difference in the "turbo s" and the normal turbo but i am just wondering about the abs part right now. (by the way the s2 is a better s version of the na 944)
and yes everywhere i read the 944's handling is absolutely spectactular (perfect 50/50) weight distribution ![]() any more opinions on abs?

Yes, I know the S2 was a better version of the NA version, but it is still the best 944 made to date.
And yes, the 944 handles amazingly. It was actually named the "best handling car ever" by a major automotive publication (can't remember which, think it was Motor Trend). And I think it would be overall better to buy a Turbo S and retrofit an ABS system to it. The newer ABS will be much better.

You give up some of your control to ABS. ABS is designed for the average person that panic locks in tight situations. I wouldn't use anti lock in racing. I want full control if I feel a lock I let go a little.
Disks are getting better and better I would retro-fit to top grade 4 wheel disk and adjustable proportioning valves. If you learn control you can out perform ABS. This comes from a control freak |
