please help 96 cavalier wont start

i have a 96 cavalier and it will not start. it acts like its a timing issue but i checked timing chain and there is no way it could have jumped. when try ing to start it it back fires and will not start. replaced the fuel pressure regulator. i was driving it down the road and pulled into the gas station and shut it off when i came out to start it it wouldnt start. after cranking on it for a while it finally started and it ran like crap couldnt get no speed out of it or nothing. i tried disconnecting the exhaust before the cat and that didnt do anything either. when i pulled the timing cover off there is a hash mark on one of the teeth and then there is a hole on another tooth (cam) the one onthe crank is lined up with the hole when properly lined up. is that right. im so ticked at this problem is probably something stupid. so if you could please HELP me!!!!!! Thanks for taking the time to help me with this problem! I GOT THE PROBLEM SOLVED I RAN A COMPRESSION TEST AND THE #3 CYLINDER IS DEAD WITH NO COMPRESSION. SO MOTOR IS JUNK!!!!!
