GTO / Evolution / or STI

Hey there. I was originally thinking about getting the GTO for months and months, and when im finally about to get it, I run into the Lancer Evolution VIII.

My friend keeps on telling me the Lancer Evolution and WRX STI which is 300LBS lighter then the 2006 GTO and has 287HP(lancer) 300HP (STI) would beat the GTO.

Can someone please clarify this, and help me make my decision on which car to get?

I have watched tons of videos on Youtube, and it's just not helping any.... THANK YOU!!!

Re: GTO / Evolution / or STI

I'd take an Evo or STi over a GTO anyday...but that's just me. We're talking about 4 doors, AWD, turbo tunabilitiy. The GTO interior is just not attractive and neither is the outside. What's great about the GTO is that it's NA and has tons of HP and torque but that's where it ends.

Re: GTO / Evolution / or STI

It has been well established that the STi beats the GTO in almost every aspect of proformance, if you doubt that just check out Edmunds.com comparison, to make matters worse the Evo stomps the STi so it would totaly OWN the GTO in a streight line and on any track. Dont get me wrong I really like the GTO but in stock form it is no thinly disguised racecar like the Evo, but for everyday driving the GTO is smoother quiter and more comfortable. However it would not take much to modify a GTO to outrun either one of them. LS2s hadle supercharging and NOS quite well in modarate doses (enough to catch the smaller cars and then some) and if you stiffen up and camber the suspension you might not catch them in the corners but you will not loose any real ground. Good luck.

I like the EVO, and GTO. I think the evo wins for stock performance (and 4wd) But i bet if you put a decent supercharger on the GTO, it would give the EVO a run for its money (in the straight line anyway).

Re: GTO / Evolution / or STI

the evo does not "stomp" the sti. their preformance is virtually identical. the gto does 0-60 in about 5 flat and the evo/sti do it in about 4.7 so its a close race. as far as handling, the gto is totally outclassed by both. even so if i chose i would go with the gto. it looks way way better and has more power potential. plus id take a 400hp coupe over some clunky sedan anyday.

and a s/c on a gto would easily spank an evo/sti in acceleration.

Re: GTO / Evolution / or STI

The Evo only slightly beats the STi in the 1/4 but stomps it on the track. It has better cornering and better slolom speeds. The STis suspension is set up more for daily driving than the Evo though.

Re: GTO / Evolution / or STI

Depends on the track, the evo can hold a .97G turn while the STi gimps around at .88G on the skidpad. Yes I know that there is more to it than just skidpad otherwise the evo would be 10 seconds faster. BTW that lap time you quoted is for the STi WR1. The regular STi ran a 1:30.1 If you would like to compare special versions there is a production 400hp Evo that would run circles around the WR1 (it even beat the 911) it ran a 1:24.8 on the same track.

Re: GTO / Evolution / or STI

You also have to consider the STi comes with all season tires while the EVO has Falkens specifically designed for the track not to mention the new STi is supposed to have tighter more responsive steering. But the fact is that the EVO is better built to handle better on tarmac with its active yaw slightly more FWD biased AWD while the STi or at least the rally versions are more suited to dirt and gravel. Just take a look at the manufacturer placings in the WRC over recent years.

The 2005 GTOs have 400hp due to an increase in bore from 5.4ls to 6. The reason though why it is still beat by the likes of the STi and EVO in the 1/4 and most tracks is because of the competition's AWD as well as them weighing in excess of 500lbs less. However, when it comes to top end and torque after tuning the GTO is on top.

Then why is the JGTC Subaru RWD?

I agree about the tuning part which is very important but stock for stock the evo or sti wins?

They converted it. Factory WRX is AWD. Between the three i'd take the Evo because its sexy as hell.

plus I like boxier styling over rounded.

I was implying that RWD is better on a road course.
