Unhappy 2000 Elantra Overheating

I really need some help here. My 2000 Elantra keeps overheating. Sometimes it will run fine for a week. Sometimes the gauge goes up and then comes down. I've had the radiator, cap, water pump and thermostat replaced. Still does the same thing. Today they replaced the head gasket saying that maybe it was a small leak from there. So far were up to 1200 bucks. I'm at the point that I don't think the mechanic knows what he's talking about. The shop is a legitimate business with many customers. The only thing I can figure is that there is something specific which is wrong with that year.

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: 2000 Elantra Overheating

Are you losing coolant? If so, you have a leak somewhere and that can cause the engine to overheat. Are the radiator fans running when the engine is hot?

Re: 2000 Elantra Overheating

I've got a 2000 Elantra also that started overheating. We didn't notice it until I had a technician start to check the freon level. He mentioned that the radiator fans were not operating.

Took it into the dealer. They said both fans were burnt out...ended up costing just at $900 to replace both! Yes, very expensive, but worth every penny when compared to replacing the head gasket, etc.

We haven't had any problems since, may want to check and see if they've burnt out. Some other forums had said that if one goes, they both normally do. BTW, they went out with 173k on the car, first major problem we've had...Art
