89 fuel pump relay location

Trying to locate the fuel pump relay on an 89 Grand Am with the 2.3 quad-4 engine.

Its located on the firewall, three relays on there, the fuel pump relay should be the one in the middle.

Thanks so much for the reply - that's exactly what I was looking for!

The problem I'm trying to trouble shoot is that the car occasionally won't start if it's low on fuel and the car is hot, however, if you let it sit for awhile it will starts right up. It has never happen when the car is cold or has a full tank of gas. Any thoughts?

You need a new fuel pump.

When they are going bad, they'll heat up and with low fuel they act up the worst. With a full tank the gas keeps it cooler, so it work without overheating.

You will have to remove the gas tank.
Best time to do it is when the tanks about empty.

Just a couple straps holding it up. An assortment of hoses running on to the top of the tank. Some of them may need loosed/removed to drop the tank.

A really large round ring holds the pump assembly into the tank. Righty tight, lefy loosie

Make a habit of filling up the gas tank when it is around 1/4 to keep the fuel pump cooler and last the fuel pump longer. Having gas above 1/4 prevents debris from being sucked in as oppose to when the fuel is almost empty.

It is good once in a while to run it down.

Keeps stuff from building up in the tank,
like the black fuel that comes out when you remove the fuel filter, it'll plug up the strainer thats on the fuel pump.
