Question Fuel Pump(I think)

My sister-in-law's car is a 2002 Elantra and will only start by spraying starting fluid into the intake manifold. The car ran for about 20 minutes then died again. I assume this is a fuel pump prob but would it be intermittant? Also, is the fuel pump hard to find and/or hard to replace? Do I need to drop the tank or is it in the engine compartment? I know nadda about Hyundai's.just Jeeps and Mustang's. I would start by replacing the fuel filter but she said it was NOT bogging at high speeds... anything will help, she has no $$$$$. I'd like to help her out.

Re: Fuel Pump(I think)

Hmmm, I'm not sure about the fuel pump because if it's dead the car wouldn't start or run at all. Could be a problem with the injectors and/or spark plugs.

If you want to check the fuel pump, it's in the gas tank. You don't have to drop the tank, you can get to it by removing the rear seat cushion. I believe the fuel filter is there too along with the pump assembly.

It could be a sensor problem too. I would check the throttle position sensor and the crank position sensor. When those go out, the car won't start.

Re: Fuel Pump(I think)

Try to see if a sending line or the tank itself is rusted out. I have a '96 and my sending line from the fuel door to the tank had completely rusted off and left a 2" gap between the fuel door and the line. I now have a hole in the top of the gas tank. The fuel tank and lines rust out like crazy on these things, so take it to someone who can give it a good visual inspection.
