Replace bearings in alternator

The alternator on my 1998 Durango is starting to squeel. I priced new and reconditioned units, and they are about $150 to $200. I was wondering if those alternators could be rebuilt with new bearings etc ?

Re: Replace bearings in alternator

better to let a specialized shop do it. I've had some luck with the older Chevy and ford alternators, but not with any new units. Are you sure its the alternator? The belt tensioner is a common problem on Durangos and very nearby.

Re: Replace bearings in alternator

Pretty sure its the alternator. I removed the belt, and if I spin the pully clockwise I can hear a little chirping noise. It almost seems like a brush or something is rubbing inside. If I spin it counterclockwise, I do not hear anything. There does not seem to be any play or looseness at the pully ??
Question--is the nut holding the pulley onto the alternator a right hand thread or left ? Thanks, Mike
