Just did my first brake job
It was much easier then I would've thought. I cleaned up the stuff and painted the calipers black, looks real nice.
Now the one thing I notice is that my rear pads were much more worn out then my fronts. Is that normal? The last time I had the brakes done all 4 were replaced at the same time. I know it's a simple job but I've never fixed anything on my car. You gotta start somewhere. |

Re: Just did my first brake job
what year is your car? It makes a difference as to what would cause worse rear wear than front.

Re: Just did my first brake job
i agree with rich- what year is the car. if someone has owned it before you, they may have just changed the fronts, which is a quick fix since the fronts USUALLY wear out much faster.

Re: Just did my first brake job
It's an 03 GT. I also noticed the rear pads are much smaller then the fronts so that might explain it.

Re: Just did my first brake job
On an 03, the caliper slides go into a bracket that mounts to the spindle. These slides can get siezed up, causing the caliper to not release fully. It can also cause the inside pad to wear much faster than the outside pad. When you had it apart, did you make sure the slide bolts were free in the bracket before you put it back together?

Re: Just did my first brake job
I just had a look at the old pads and all 4 rear pads have the same amount of compound left. Not sure about the slide bolts though, are those the ones holding the calipers to the wheel? Everything seemed good when I had it apart.
My buddies brother is a GM mechanic so I'm going to discuss this with him on the weekend but just to be clear, is it abnormal for the rear pads to be worn down faster then the fronts? Thanks for your help Richtazz. |

Re: Just did my first brake job
If you say that all 4 pads were done at the same time....My only guess is that the pads on the rear were of a much lower quality than the front.

Re: Just did my first brake job
No, the fronts wear faster in general than the rear, so as Regalfriend said, either the rear pads were of inferior quality, or they changed the front pads once before and didn't do the rears. If all four rear pads were equally worn, then the slides are most likely ok. It wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion from your mechanic friend though, just in case. Finally, you are welcome Biz.
