Re: 98-02 Rodeo-Ever had the Timing Belt break?

I've only read about a couple (2 that I can think of). Most change them by 120k. I've read a couple of post of upto 180k on the orginal belt.

What year was the one I just read about on here that the guy bought the Rodeo for $400 and slapped a new belt on and everything was OK? That's the only one I've heard.

I just replaced mine at 145k, I don't know if it was done once before but it was in fair condition, only some minor cracking on the smooth side.

Re: 98-02 Rodeo-Ever had the Timing Belt break?

I'm at 120,000 on my 00 Rodeo with all orig. parts including water pump.
Starting to get a little clatter sound under load. I'm pretty sure it's the tensioner getting tired.
I'm a huge believer in preemptive maintenance, but in this case I'm probably going to let it go until the water pump gives out or the belt jumps a tooth due to the tensioner.

Re: 98-02 Rodeo-Ever had the Timing Belt break?

I figure by next summer I'll be approaching 100K and will look into replacing it then along with cooling hoses. I really hope to keep it around till 150K without major issues.

Re: 98-02 Rodeo-Ever had the Timing Belt break?

Just did my 2nd set at 152k miles - waterpump croaked at 92k miles, causing tensioner to weaken, belt jumped a tooth; no damage.

Did 1st set (waterpump, belt, tensioner) as preventative maintenance at 59k miles - if I had known the 3.2L sohc was a NON-interference engine, I would've left it alone tell either the tensioner or pump gave out.

Should be good to go for another 90-100k miles.

Question Re: 98-02 Rodeo-Ever had the Timing Belt break?

I'm sure this has been answered before, but for my own piece of mind, is the 3.2 v6 in the 1999 Rodeo a interference or non-interference engine?

Thanks,
Jim

Re: 98-02 Rodeo-Ever had the Timing Belt break?

Yes, mine broke at about 89000 miles and to repair the heads and gaskets and put her all back together with a new belt was quite pricy! over a grand...so, my advice is to be safe rather than sorry.
bon chance!

What engine did you have wildly? I can't remember if it was the non-interference 3.2L or not...

It was a '99 3.2L. Head damage following a timing belt tensioner mishap on a non-interference engine.
