Re: Changing Brakes Pads on 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GT
Welcome to AF!!
Changing the pads is relatively easy. Jack up the car and support it on jack stands. Remove the wheel and then loosen the caliper by removing the mounting bolts. I recommend that you loosen the bleeder screw on the caliper before you remove the bolts and pull the caliper off the mount. This will make things a lot easier. Remove the caliper from the mount and remove the pads. Then open the bleeder screw and press the piston back into the caliper. You will need a c-clamp or large pair of channel lock pliers. Brake fluid will come out the bleeder so you may want to put some rags behind it. Once it is in all the way simply reverse the pad process, lubricate the slides on the side of the calipers with brake grease and replace the pads and the caliper bolts. Be very careful not to get grease on the pads or the rotors. A good can of brake cleaner should clean the rotors for you when you are done.
After everything is back in place you will need to bleed the brakes. You can do this with a piece of plastic line and a soda bottle or you can purchase a bleeder kit. However you decide to do it make certain to keep the master cylinder full at all times. Tighten the bleeder screw and have someone pump up the brake pressure, then release the bleeder screw. Do this until you have no more air coming from the caliper and tighen the bleeder screw. On this car you will want to have the key on so that the abs pumps work. After everything is back together and bled, go to the other side and repeat.
I hope this helps you!
