Trip meter not changing

I own 91 TC. Tripmeter suddenly stop working.... Other meters such as

odometer and speedmeter are ok.When I reset the tripmeter, still it doesn't

work yet. Is it an electrical problem or cluster broke down?

If somebody has idea, please give some advices.

Thanks all.

Better check the cables from the trans. speed control 1st. Does the cruise control work? Check the cables in/out of the cruise control too.

Re: Trip meter not changing

Cruise control is working properly. Also, odometer is working. I realized that the lamp for parking brake does not turn on when I push the parking brake pedal. However, it turns on when I twist the ignition key to start the engine. So, I think it is not caused by dead bulb. Is it concern with the odometer problem?

my town car did the same thing with your park brake light not working when the park brake was engaged. turned out to be a loose connection by the hood release latch. don't think that would have anything to do with your odometer not working...

I also think the problem of park brake light is just loose connection bexause I saw it worked often not always. Well, is it hard work to remove the instrument cluster from the instrument panel?

the wire for the light to go on when the park brake is engaged is by the emergency brake itself. its to the left of the brake pedal up against the lower firewall. if you look carefully, you can trace the wire going from the park brake itself to the connection point.

as far as removing the instrument cluster i have removed mine from my town car before. however, i have a digital dash and not a mechanical. so i just had to unplug wires. i dont know what it would look like behind the dash with a mechanical instrument. but it isn't that hard to take the dash apart to get to it.

Re: Trip meter not changing

You know, all this time I was reading this problem wrong, very sorry, I'm getting old.

I was (lord knows why) under the impression that your speedo was dead and the odometer / tripmeter was working, very sorry for the run-around.

PINPOINT TEST C: SPEEDOMETER AND/OR ODOMETERS INOPERATIVE
C16 CHECK TRIP ODOMETER
  • Fully depress trip odometer reset button.
  • Drive vehicle for a minimum of one mile and observe trip odometer tenths" column.

Does trip odometer operate?

Yes
Service complete.

No
REPLACE speedometer. REPEAT

BTW, Is your's the same as the 1992 ? That's the oldest manual I have.

Wrapped around those pictures in the Manual is the Removal / Installation procedures. There's also some more on testing the individual guages within the cluster. Nothing more on the Tripminder though
