Dome Light

I just bought a 96 Tahoe with 82k on it today and when I left the bank the person that sold me the truck said he had to pull the fuse for the dome light because it always stays on. Does anyone know why this would happen? I messed with the dome override and it did not help, could it be a electrically short? Thanks for the help!

The first thing I would check would be the door switches. Those plungers are cheap and go out all the time. Most of the time the dome light WON'T go on, but one could be stuck on I suppose if the plunger is broke off...

Re: Dome Light

I replaced both of them and nothing changed!!!! I might try changing the ones on the back doors and the hatch.

Re: Dome Light

If you have combination Map/Courtesy lamps in the interior rearview mirror, you might also want to check the switches in the mirror and the wire harness above the headliner. Any grounding there can operate ALL the interior courtesy lamps.

The body control module could also have a problem if the vehicle has theatre lighting.

If the headlamp switch has an interior lamp override switch, there might be problems there as well.

Re: Dome Light

I had to pull the fuse to my dome lights also January 2nd 2006. Been in the dark the whole time. I guess when I pulled that fuse it also must control the outside mirrors. Not sure. Maybe I have another problem.
My newest problem is maybe it needs an idler arm. At first when I was driving and turning my steering wheel to the left, just a little, something would pull my steering wheel more to the left. Now, it is doing it left and right. I am getting that looked at tomorrow. I have a crack in my intake manifold, but Stop Leak works so far. Had to add SL two times this year. My Tahoe is a '99. It will be paid for in 4 months. Finally.

Re: Dome Light

Mechanicsdaughter, it sounds like your steering problem may be the EVO sensor. My '97 did the same thing and replacing the sensor made it drive like new.

Re: Dome Light/ Jonnik - sensor

Hello Jonnik,
Friday I took it in for an alignment and an oil change. I was expecting them to fix something. All the guy does is come in and tell me I need a new air filter. Doesn't matter where you go they always try to sell you a new air filter. He goes on to tell me there is nothing wrong with my truck. I told him what my dad and I found. He said that wouldn't cause the problem, and he said I would need a steering sensor (the same kind you mentioned?) from the dealership. Nothing would fix it but that. We I drove it to the gas station and the steering problem wasn't there. Then, I drove it 5 miles home and I never could get it to jerk to the left or right. Maybe, that will be all that it needs. If not I know now to get a sensor.
Thanks,
April

Re: Dome Light

Yes, that's the sensor I was talking about. It monitors how fast you turn the steering wheel and the computer takes this data and the vehicle speed and will limit the power steering fluid pressure. The faster the vehicle goes, the less power steering you have.

What does EVO stand for? Will the dealership have one on hand or is it special order? Is it something I can put in myself? Cost of EVO? Labor?
It did start doing it again today. Can it lead to other problems if I don't get it fixed?
Thanks,
April

Re: Dome Light

I think it means electronically variable orifice. The dealer should have some on hand. There have been lots of postings on this part in this forum, so look around. Mine was bad for quite a while before I figured the problem out, thanks to the great people here in this forum (you guys ROCK!).
