My car is making a power steering noise and would like to know how to flush if anyone knows. Was told this car needs ATF not power steering fluid.

Re: 94 park ave. ultra power steering?
Did you check the level? Are there any leaks? I would stick with power steering fluid. You can stick a long small tube down the res. tube to the power steering pump and suck out the fluid that way, not with your mouth of course, some kind of hand pump will work. I sucked out the dirty fluid, put new in, and started it, I let it run about a minute and ran through the process a couple more times. I think this flushes the entire system better. This is what I have done with my 94 Ultra's PS fluid.
Note: If you do put a small tube down the res. tube you may have to twist the tubing when you get down to the pump cause it may get caught where the pump and res. tube meet. Push and twist at the same time and it should go down some more into the pump. |

Re: 94 park ave. ultra power steering?
Did whoever recommended ATF as a fill suggest what type of ATF? There are only about four common types, and they all have different properties. I would suggest that Cntrysthbst is correct, and that you use a power steering oil which meets the GM 9985010 specification - DO NOT use Honda designated power steering oil.

I will try the small tube, however, looks like there is a new leak. Just repaired the struts and tranny gaskets and fluid. Would rather not have to change the power steering pump yet. It's been a great car up to now... Engine great... Time for everything else.

Re: 94 park ave. ultra power steering?
I think when the pump starts making noise, bearings maybe, and the fluid is not low, I would think about getting it replaced. Hopefully the flush will work for you, as it did help alittle with me. I add this because your pump could be breaking down inside and foreign debris could contaminate your entire power steering system, mainly the rack. I could just be over cautious. Hopefully someone else will respond to this with better info. However, whether you flush the fluid or replace the pump, we all will get you through it. Good luck!

Re: 94 park ave. ultra power steering?
flush complete! Took it in and found out the water pump is the reason for the noise. (fluid was black...) Looks like another thread
