Re: Looking for a tranny for a '99 Dodge Stratus
The 2-door Stratus is made by Mitsubishi, the 4-door and Convertible is made by DCX, we need to know which car you have and which engine/transmission you have to answer your question.

Re: Looking for a tranny for a '99 Dodge Stratus
I know it is a 2.4 litre engine. Looking for the tranny type.
(Sorry for being such a fat head. I know virtually nothing when it comes to cars). And, thank you for your help. |

Re: Looking for a tranny for a '99 Dodge Stratus
The 2.4l only came with a 4-speed automatic, so you don't have to look any further.
What seems to be the problem with it? The Trans is a fully computer controlled unit. Some of them fail b/c of a computer problem and some fail b/c of a mechanical problem. Most fail b/c someone at some recent time put the wrong transmission fluid in it and poisoned the trans. These transmissions only use Mopar ATF+3 or ATF+4 fluid. If you add any amount of Dextron, the trans will destruct. |

Re: Looking for a tranny for a '99 Dodge Stratus
It is my mother's car, so i have no idea what CAUSED the problem. All I know is it leaks tranny fluid like you read about.
She bought a brand new Durango and is giving me the Stratus. (It only has 75,000 miles on it.) She took it to a reputable shop and they said 'new tranny'. I just think I can do better than the $1200 tranny they are quoting me. Any ideas? |

Re: Looking for a tranny for a '99 Dodge Stratus
If it is only a leak problem, why a rebuild?
If it is leaking from the front bearing then the only way to fix it is to takes it all the way apart. If it is only the pan gasket leaking and someone put the wrong fluid in it to top it off. You may be able to have the fluid and filter changed. Drive it a short time to see if it works any better and then change the fluid filter again to further rid the trans of bad fluid. I' had this problem with a Caravan I bought cheap b/c of "bad trans needs rebuilt". It had a leak so someone put the wrong fluid in it. It took to fluid/filter changes $200 to fix it but it was better than $1200. Changing the fluid/filter does not guarantee a fix, so do it as a gamble if you decide to try it. |
