upper pin without help?
I got the lower pin changed without help, since there's play in the upper pin/bushing. Took an hour.
Now, can I do the top without pulling the spring, and without putting stress on the lower new pin/bushing?

I did remove the door myself, but I would recommend a second set of hands. I had the window fully opened so I could grab the frame. I put a floor jack and some wood beneath the end of the door to realign it (really bad bushings and an egg shaped hole in the hinge) and also to hold it in place. I'm sure you could use cargo straps to secure the door to an overhead support and hold it in place. I don't know if you can drive the pin out without removing the spring.

I found a chair that was the perfect height to support the door when I removed it from the vehicle. Took me about 20 minutes to to the last one. I still don't have the spring back in yet though.

I used a clamshell type compressor I got with a chevy valvetrain kit... It was narrow enough to get right in there..

Auto body and paint stores all sell the spring remover/installer for around $15 and while you can pull it out without one (watch it fly!) its nearly impossible to put it back in without and you may get hurt. Upper and lower bushing should be done with the door separated (pins out on both) then line up and insert the pins.
