dying sportage needs help

My husband drove home in our sportage on Wednesday (@30mi) no problems. Ten minutes later my son went to use the car it would not start. We have changed spark plugs and wires about 2 weeks ago. Saturday we changed the fuel pump and fuel filter--still no luck. Does anyone have any ideas??!!

Re: dying sportage needs help

..HOw come that happens with the son so often--hey dad, not my fault.... ....do they have a special way of making it happen? ....As I understand, the starter does crank the engine, but is does not fire-up..right? PRoblem is with this engine set-up, it is very difficult to check for spark....
That kind of instantaneous problem is generally electronics components . Is the Check Engine Light ON? That could help, but would need to be scanned to pull the codes if any.

One frequently reported problem....on this car as in most others...is the crank sensor...not very expensive, easy to change, I could even say, normal maintenance.... http://www.geocities.com/lmp4203/kia...nk_sensors.jpg
MOre details would be needed to be sure.
mmm. what mileage?

Re: dying sportage needs help

There is 112,000mi. not sure about the check engine light because we can't get it to run long enough for all the dash lights to turn off. We did check for a spark - the screwdriver in the sprk plug boot...yes we have a spark. We looked at the timing belt but we did not take the cover off completely, it seems to be tight, but not sure of the condition of the teeth of the belt.

usually when the timing belts go they either slip a cog or they snap altogether. and i agree with lmp.

Re: dying sportage needs help

Well we have now changed the fuel pump, fuel filter, spark plugs and wires, relays, the timing belt is totally visible and lines up to all the marks. We are going to change the timing belt as long as we are this far into it. But we are getting very frustrated!! Nothing we do seems to be the problem. Any ideas anyone?!?!

Re: dying sportage needs help

It is either fuel, or spark. You said you have spark...OK for the time being, so :
- do you have the 1 sec fuel pump buzz at "key ON" ? IF not, check for failed fuel pump relay, but this may be caused by other sensor failure.
- can you check for pulse at injectors ?
A few months ago I had this exact problem with my other car (Pontiac Transport): spark, but no fuel injector pulse. Cause: loss of 3x Crank Sensor Signal...(I still had the 18x signal so I had spark) and in my case, it was not the crank sensor, but an amplifer/buffer failure, part of ignition module, that did not pass the signal to the computer.
So this brings us back to the sensors, either the crank sensor or the cam sensor. I think the crank sensor here gives only one signal....and it is used for spark. But the cam signal is used to synchronize the injectors, so if your injectors do not fire that would make it a likely suspect here .
